Milargo is a multi champion, in hand, under saddle and in harness. He achieved his Halter Roll of Merit and Working Roll of Merit, and therefore also his Champion Roll of Merit from the AHAA during his second show season. He has a truly exceptional temperament being super quiet and a true gentleman in every environment. He is exclusively handled by a lady and is even handled at home by a small boy. This temperament is passed on to his progeny with all being tractable and easily handled. Since purchase Milargo has lived in Sarina in the tropical north and now is situated in Maryborough in the South East corner of Qld. He has been ridden and trained to his present level by Gillian Kerr. They currently train as much as possible with Miguel Tavora who travels form Sydney to the region on a regular basis. The following movements are already established; Levade, Spanish Walk, Passage, Bow, Counting, Lay Down on command, Flying Changes, Lateral Work eg; Traver/Renver/Half Pass. In training are Piaffe, Pirouettes, Tempi Changes, and Spanish Salute. Long reining movements are well established and Milargo performs well in this discipline. The work in harness graduated from the long rein work, although Gillian had no experience of driving, with Milargo's easy temperament it was a simple procedure to hook him up to a sulky and off we went. (I don't recommend this as I now know how much could have gone wrong!) We had 1 hour's practice on the first day of harness breaking, the next day we performed in harness at Mackay show to win Champion harness horse! He has won many champions in this discipline since then and become better and better at the movements required. We believe that his ridden and dressage training has really advanced his abilities in harness. In fact quite a few judges have told us they don't know why we would bother competing in ridden classes when he is such a wonderful harness horse. His dressage career has been more sedate and less spectacular, as it should be. We started at Preliminary level in 2000 and have gradually got to Advanced level in 2005. Without benefit of an experienced or regular trainer the first few years were quite difficult, but now with the help of M. Tavora we are certainly advancing more rapidly and learning the correct way to perform the movements on the way. |

The exhibition classes at shows and displays we have put on for various agricultural shows and charities are Milargo's favourite performances. He just loves to do his tricks and especially responds to the cheers and clapping of the crowd. In fact when we are trying to perform a particularly difficult dressage movement Milargo will often throw in a trick in the hopes of slipping past the more difficult movement! When training in tricks I use a long whip which I tap on various parts of his anatomy as the aid for the particular trick and when it is performed well or he has tried hard then he is rewarded with a sugar lump which I carry in a bum bag when we are training. Another part of the performances is the beautiful and colourful costumes we wear. The bright fuchsia fiesta costume has been extensively altered and added to by Gillian, and although many fiesta classes have been won with it Milargo finds the colour a bit effeminate and is not too keen when he see's it come out! We plan to make a new one with a more masculine colour! Another costume that has proved very popular with the crowds is the Baroque costume which was copied from a baroque old masters painting. With a shaped saddle pad made of the same satin burgundy material as the jacket and a handmade English leather bridle copied from an old master painting, this costume only needs the Tricorn hat and linen shirt made in and imported from the USA to finish it off. The ostrich feathers in the hat have proved problematic at times when the wind has got up during a performance, but are now permanently sewn in! |
